LOON LAB PURPOSE AND CONTENT

Loon Lab will forge deeper connections between participants and the lakes they enjoy while teaching them how to protect our beautiful waters and loon habitat. The primary objective is to engage visitors in stewardship using the Loon/Lake/People Curriculum designed by the National Loon Center and researchers from the University of Minnesota. The National Loon Center offers Loon Lab on Gull Lake as part of its National Freshwater Institute programming.



NATIONAL LOON CENTER MISSION
The National Loon Center (NLC) engages communities to protect loons and freshwater habitats through research, education and advocacy.

GOALS OF LOON LAB
  1. Have fun learning about how to be the best stewards of our lakes!
  2. Share interesting scientific information about loons, including their behaviors and habitat
  3. Educate Loon Lab participants on threats to loons and engage them in reducing those
    threats
  4. Gather and contribute research to advance scientific understanding of loons – look for loons and contribute as citizen scientists.
  5. Learn about the meanings of the loon’s various calls as determined through decades of research

What YOU Will Need

Do I need sailing skills? What should I bring?
This is a non-sailing class; however, class may take place on the water or on shore based on weather. 

​The following items are required for the studentsʼ safety and enjoyment:
* Buff or mask for indoor restroom use
• Appropriate clothing for outdoor class, including a wind breaker or sweatshirt.
* Coast Guard approved, well-fitting, lifejacket if boating for class
* Non-marring, waterproof footwear if boating for class
* Water bottle
* Towel​

These items are suggested:
* Sunscreen
• Hat
* Backpack for all this gear

All other materials for lessons are provided. PFDs are required when in and on the water, but will be provided for those that do not have one.
