FINANCIAL AID

Don't let the cost of youth sports keep you on shore! We are very proud of the fundraising we accomplish each year through our loyal donors and sponsors. Our goal is to ensure that sailing is accessible to all who desire to learn this wonderful life sport. Financial Aid is available to students through two memorial funds, it may be used to reduce the total cost or to cover the total cost.

Charles McQuinn Memorial Fund

Established 2011
The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation's Charles McQuinn Memorial Fund is available for use by GLSS for financial aid. Charles spent summers on Gull Lake and learned to sail at GLSS. He moved to Brainerd and established multiple business as well as serving on the Board of Directors of Gull Lake Yacht Club and Mt. Ski Gull. He and was an avid sailor and skier and past Commodore of Gull Lake Yacht Club. He always said, "Active youth are healthy youth!"

The fund was instrumental in founding the Brainerd High School Sailing Team in 2018 by purchasing boats and funding the coach.

Thomas Schmid memorial scolarship fund

Established 2021
We are very honored to have our sailing school chosen by the family of Thomas Schmid to establish a scholarship memorial in his honor. Tom passed away December 24, 2020. To say Tom was an avid sailor would be an understatement! Tom taught sailing and waterskiing at Camp Foley in the 60's, 70's and 80's. His sailing adventures are both notable and numerous! Tom sailed the Apostle Islands, the entire Mississippi River and the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as to Cuba. Finally settling in Key West where he lived on his boat his last 12 years. It is of note he became famous for riding out Hurricane Irma in an effort to save his boat and survived to tell many stories about it!

When thinking about a memorial for Tom, his family wanted it to be for a sailing school. Tom's family had spent many summers sailing with him in the annual Gull Lake Fun Regatta and they hosted a number of laser regattas at GLYC as well. The Schmid family all have fond memories of those regattas and camping out at GLYC and would like to establish a scholarship to provide access for youth who might otherwise not have an opportunity to learn this wonderful lifelong sport. If you would like to donate to this scholarship fund click here and write Thomas Schmid in the comment section on the donation page.

We at Gull Lake Sailing School send the Schmid family our condolences and our deepest thanks for thinking of our school. With the growth of our programs we know this will be very meaningful!
