MEET OUR WATERFRONT MANAGER, ELLIE MURPHY

We are so excited to have one of our own returning to run the summer sailing school! Ellie has been sailing ever since she can remember and found her love for it here at GLSS and GLYC after spending nearly every summer in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Ellie is a jumior studying atmospheric sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she also is on their nationally recognized sailing team. Wisconsin is a successfully ranked program and she is often traveling around the country in the Fall and Spring for dingy and keelboat regattas. Last Spring, Ellie returned to GLSS to help coach the Brainerd/Pequot Lakes High School Sailing Team and instruct summer sailing. Well-versed in optis, 420s, x-boats, scows, lasers, keelboats, and more as well as US Sailing Level 1 certified, Ellie has lots of sailing knowledge to offer to the next level of sailors!

Each year the
Gull Chain of Lakes Association (GCOLA) in conjunction with Cass and Crow Wing County Water Patrols and The Minnesota DNR sponsors boat safety classes for youths ages 12 to 17. Minnesota state law requires all teens 13-17 years old to have a permit to operate a personal watercraft and all youth ages 12-17 must have a permit to operate a boat with a motor of over 25 HP.  This class not only goes through all rules and regulations, but also provides all participants hands on boat operation training. On water instruction may be adjusted due to Covid-19. This class qualifies participants for the required permits.  GCOLA will be giving participants a life jacket who complete the class.  The sheriff’s office strongly recommends that all young people in this age bracket take the class.

Thank you boat safety sponsors!

Thanks to these sponsors there is no cost for the classes and thanks to Zorbaz for pizza!

making history!

March 4, 2022

We are excited to announce Gull Lake Sailing School is becoming Gull Lake Sailing School – YMCA and the Brainerd Family YMCA will have a new location on Gull Lake!

The YMCA is one of the most respected organizations worldwide. This partnership brings their programming expertise and Gull Lake Sailing School’s stunning waterfront property, facility, sailing knowledge and history together.

So, what does this mean?
  • GLSS is finalizing a three-year, Facility And Operating Agreement with the YMCA, with plans for a long-term agreement to follow.

  • The YMCA will operate and coordinate all programming, including the sailing school.
    • The YMCA will be expanding access to sailing classes through their summer programming.
    • Sailing School registration is live at GLYC.com and links to the YMCA.
    • The YMCA will continue to offer swimming and fitness classes at GLSS - YMCA.
    • The YMCA will be exploring opportunities for new classes and programs at GLSS - YMCA.

  • GLSS will continue to own the property, facility, docks and watercraft.
    • GLSS will have a representative on the YMCA Board of Directors and will continue as a 501c3 organization with our own board and whose mission is unchanged, ‘To Grow Sailing and Community on Gull Lake.’
    •  GLSS – YMCA will continue to be the home of the Brainerd Lakes High School Sailing Team sponsored by GLSS.

  • The Gull Lake Yacht Club’s MC Fleet #104 and associated regattas will continue to sail from the GLSS – YMCA.

“It has been a delight to work with the YMCA the past 18 months. We know this partnership will add a lot of value to both organizations and will be able to tap into the full potential GLSS and GLYC envisioned when the new facility was built.” Stated GLSS Co-President Mary Jetland.

YMCA CEO, Shane Riffle added, “Everything that we can do to support kids and families is important to what we do at the Y as we work to ‘Strengthen the Foundation of our Community’. Partnerships like this allow for more access and opportunities to change lives. It truly amplifies what we might otherwise do individually. We are excited to be the new neighbor on Gull Lake. Our goal is to be vibrant and unobtrusive!”

GLSS neighbor Joe Mucha was pleased to hear about the partnership and stated, “The Y is a excellent organization. It is a partnership the original founders of the Gull Lake Yacht Club would be proud of.”

We cannot think of a better way to celebrate the 75th year of sailing on Gull Lake.
