About high school sailing
The Brainerd Area High School Racing Team is co-ed and available to 7th-12th grade students from any school in the Brainerd Area. High School sailing is a two season sport – sailors can participate in the fall, spring or both. Practices are held after school Tuesday through Thursday (3:30-6:30). Sailors have the opportunity to attend competitions across Minnesota most weekends through the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association.
We primarily focus on learning about sailboat racing, but it’s also a great opportunity to improve your sailing abilities even if you aren’t interesting in competing. Practices are hosted by the Gull Lake Sailing School in boats called Club 420s. Essential safety and racing gear will be provided. You don’t need to know how to sail to join the team; in fact you can join even if you have never been in a sailboat before!
If you’re looking for a new and unique sport, look no further than high school sailing. Sailboat racing is a great choice of sport because it offers such a wide variety of experiences and opportunities, as well as being COVID safe. Sailing is a coed sport available for anyone from 7-12th grade, from any school.
Athletes who meet team criteria are eligible to earn a varsity letter.

Fall 2021 HIGHLIGHTS
Fall High School Season Wrap up
From Coach Sullivan
The 2021 fall high school sailing season saw 12 sailors (Ethan Stohr, Wyatt Holst, Sebastian Tisdell, Kristoffer Koop, Teagan Hartwig-Burton, Brandon Eberts, Tristan Raimann, Brooke Krivich, Alex Mann, Drew Cline, Ella Nelson, Erick Haskell) from Brainerd and Pequot Lakes High Schools enjoy the unusually warm and pleasant weather out on Gull Lake.
Our team competed in 4 regattas this season, 3 conference events and 1 regional invitational. In the conference events, we finished 14th out of 23 at Minneapolis Sailing Center, 8th and 21st out of 23 at Lake Minnetonka Sailing School, and 8th and 9th out of 15 at St. Croix Sailing School. Highlights from these events included two 2nd place division finishes by Wyatt Holst/Teagan Hartwig-Burton and Ethan Stohr/Sebastian Tisdell and our first ever race win by Ethan Stohr/Sebastian Tisdell!
Our final regatta of the season was the Art Johnson Invitational at White Bear Sailing School. This event is one of the most popular fall high school events in the Midwest, and draws teams from the Milwaukee and Chicago areas as well as Minnesota teams. After one day of tough physical heavy wind sailing, and one day of fickle light wind sailing, our teams finished 9th and 19th out of 23 with an impressive 6th place division finish from the Pequot Lakes team.
